Kindergarten and 1st Grade are learning about Subject Matter in Art; Portrait, Landscape, and Still-Life.  Students first drew a still life of a stuffed animal, then they painted their drawing with watercolor.  The lesson focused on drawing the shapes we saw in our still life and using the watercolor and brushes appropriately. Students have been learning how to identify and describe the subject matter of artwork.  Just ask them!  These images are from Ms. Hinton’s class, more to come soon…

Symmetrical Butterfly Collages

These artworks were created by using several art processes and media.  Students folded a sheet of paper and applied paint on one side in the shape of a butterfly wing.  When they folded and pressed their papers it created a print on the other side.  When unfolded a beautiful symmetrical butterfly design had been created.  After their prints dried students cut out their butterflies and glued them to another piece of paper.  To finish their artwork students cut out geometric shapes and created a collage with a symmetrical design.

Crayon and Watercolor Resist Landscapes

Students drew a landscape with a horizon line, foreground, middle ground, and background.  They colored the small objects with crayon, then painted with watercolor.  The areas colored with crayon resist the watercolor creating an interesting visual effect.
